Applying a security seal, also known as a tamper-evident seal, to a spirit bottle can be an important part of the drinks packaging process. Not only does it ensure that the product is packaged securely, it also makes any tampering with the products evident immediately – reassuring to both everyday consumers and drinks professionals.

The use of these seals prevents products that have been interfered with from being purchased, resulting in higher customer satisfaction levels. Tamper-evident seals are widely used in the pharmaceutical and food and drink industries to provide that further element of security for what can be potentially vulnerable products.

Function and style

However, despite the functional benefits of the tamper-evident seal, the aesthetic of a product can often suffer. For brands who spend months – some even years – on their product’s packaging design, this can be a hefty compromise. There are few packaging designs that exist today which can adopt the style of the security seal as part of the overall design. However, this is often due to the security seal not being purposefully constructed to do more than protect. This raises the question – is it possible to integrate design elements with tamper-evident seals?

The answer? Yes. One of the most stylish yet effective ways to incorporate tamper-evident seals into drink product packaging is through smaller design elements, like charms and neck wraps. As charms are intended as a neck decoration, which hangs down from the neck of the bottle, they can very easily be used to include a security seal.

For example, if the cord, ribbon or chain fastening that the charm is attached to is placed around the lid of the bottle with the tail underneath a neck wrap, it will become very easy to spot if the product has been tampered with. Not only does this allow you to secure your product and identify when it has been interfered with, it also stops your brand from having to compromise on the aesthetics of your product for the sake of security. The work that we’ve done with Teeling Whiskey is a great example of this.
