With one-third of consumer purchasing decisions being determined by packaging, it’s easy to understand how packaging can impact product sales and why it’s so important. You have, of course, devoted plenty of time, thought and resources to finding the perfect design. After all, from your logo to your brand colours, it’s how the world sees your brand. There’s plenty of thought and effort that goes into designing packaging, which is why it can be so disappointing when your product isn’t doing as well as it should on the shelf.

Your product packaging is an extension of your brand representation, what distinguishes you and your product on the shelf. However, if your product packaging isn’t refreshed every now and again, it can grow too familiar, meaning customers scan past it on the shelf, or outdated, and your business could be seen as out-fashioned – which, in a world with so much choice, can be a big deterrent for potential customers as they have plenty of other options.

Things to consider

Within the packaging industry, there are always going to be trends that do better than others. Some trends that have dramatic changes each year are not sustainable and tend to come and go, however, it is important to consider the trends that will be around in the long run.

Ignoring trends that can ultimately impact the way that customers make their purchasing decisions, like sustainable and eco-friendly materials down to convenience and flexible packaging can have a damaging impact on the way that your product is received by customers. By not taking into account these aspects when thinking about updating your packaging, your packaging can appear outdated.

Seasonal packaging on products is a great way to release limited edition designs that encourage potential customers to purchase your product because of its exciting new look and even trial a new design without having to take a risk on changing your entire product packaging design. Seasonal packaging helps to make the product stand out more in comparison to the original design, creating a demand among your customers.

However, trying to implement an entire redesign of your packaging is hard to justify with the amount of time and consideration even the initial packaging design requires- so it’s best to consider the main elements of your packaging. Whether it’s the colours or just down to the fact that maybe your packaging is missing something to tie it all together, there are plenty of ways that you can revamp your packaging – even the introduction of embellishment can make all the difference to your design.
