Gin has always been a popular drink since the 17th century, but in the past few years, we have seen a gin renaissance. As stated in The Telegraph in June 2017, the Wine and Spirit Trade Association reported that in the past year over 43 million bottles of gin have been sold across the country. With this increase, we have seen more than double the number of gin brands being sold between 2010 and 2016.

How Did This Start?

In short, TV series such as Downtown Abbey and James Bond have featured gin in them which has helped start the revolution. There are many celebrities which also enjoy gin with a mixer that has also sparked interest, including none other than HRH The Queen.

Gin is notoriously also associated with being lower in calories than other traditional drinks with a standard G&T packing 126 calories (or 56 with slimline tonic) compared with 215 calories for a pint of beer.

Will It Continue?

Distilleries in the UK have continued to pop up and gin has been continuing to grow since 2016 so what can stop it?

Tax hikes by the government carried out in March 2017, saw 30p added to every bottle of gin sold. According to The Wine and Spirit Trade Association November Budget Submission 2017, “ a start-up distillery producing 100,000 bottles of gin per year will have to pay around £800,000 in duty upfront”. This is a huge investment that could see the gin industry growth start to stall.

It’s not all bad news though as the spirits industry has never been stronger, and gin is one of the leading forces of this. With more and more pubs adding a selection of gins to their repertoires and dedicated gin bars opening regularly, the trend is set to continue.

With all this choice though, distinguishing your brand from the competition is key in order to survive and that’s where Signet can step in. Adding a beautiful bottle embellishment such as a flexible aluminium label or a medallion can help make your brand memorable.
