As the drinks industry continues to expand and develop, the rise of craft spirits, among craft beers and ciders, cannot be ignored. From rum to gin, there’s plenty in the way of craft spirits, both online and in-store – all of which embody something different. So much so that many prefer craft spirits to more traditionally commercial brands, which is also likely down to the consumer trend of buying locally from smaller distilleries and breweries. In fact, the number of distilleries registered has nearly trebled since 2015, with a number of new entrants rising at faster rates with each passing year.
With the popularity of craft spirits rising, this has lead to many questioning what exactly makes a craft spirit. Aside from the words “craft” and “artisan” used to describe the product as well as often being printed on the packaging, craft spirits have no real official definition, despite industry organisations trying to produce official “craft spirit certification” and place production limits for craft distilleries to better help define what craft spirits are. The phrase “spirits made by real people in the traditional way” is something that often follows and can be used as a description of craft spirits, however, while accurate to some degree, can actually be considered damaging to craft spirits who celebrate innovation and experimenting with their products. In actuality, the general definition for craft spirits is that the spirit is handcrafted and normally produced by a small distillery who often use locally sourced ingredients and materials. there is no current definition exactly and by saying that craft spirits are normally produced by a small distillery, this doesn’t exclude the larger distilleries, the important element is the hand crafted, which larger small distilleries tend to focus on more.
From fruit infusions to uniquely flavoured spirits, the innovation that stems from craft spirits is otherwise unparalleled in the drinks industry. With so much variety and artistry, it’s no wonder that consumers are much more likely to opt for what is often considered a luxury product. With so many consumers now taking into account sustainability, which many craft spirit brands implement in terms of their packaging and materials used, and the importance of supporting small local businesses, it’s no wonder that craft spirits are so popular.
