For over 20 years, Pantone has released a Colour of the Year – which has influenced the development of countless products and, ultimately, numerous industries, from fashion to packaging. The careful selection process from the Pantone Colour Institute involves plenty of consideration, as well as analysis of previous, existing and potential future trends. They also contemplate any and all influences around the world, encompassing the entertainment -industry, all aspects of the design industry, lifestyles, new technologies, materials and textures, to name a few.
Alright, alright – we hear you! This year, The Pantone Colour Institute has chosen “an animating and life-affirming coral hue, with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge”, otherwise known as Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral. Taking inspiration from the natural landscape of the ocean, Living Coral is a vibrant yet mellow colour that offers warmth and comfort, much like how coral reefs provide shelter in our continuously shifting societal environment.
However, Living Coral isn’t just representative of our natural sea life. It also pays tribute to the “lively presence” it portrays on social media, as multiple influencers and stars are already choosing to implement this colour into their brand palette. So, while the colour is elusive in nature, Living Coral does make many appearances in industries such as clothing, cosmetics, home furnishings and, most importantly for us, packaging.
There are already some great examples of existing packaging that is already ahead of the game by featuring Living Coral. These include PYT Beauty, with the coral outer packaging for their No B.S makeup line, Brandless and their coral coloured facial scrub bottle, as well as Nomikai and its rosé in a can product, which features an ombre coral colour as part of the packaging. It’s clear that Living Coral is destined to be a part of some truly great creations, and we can’t wait to see the impact it will have in 2019’s packaging trends.
